19 – 30 Principle for individual development

It has been a grave area of concern in each organization especially in the month of March when the annual appraisal is going on and people usually have a lot of discontent regarding the rating they have got after working complete year diligently. The same has happened everywhere on the globe in view of my discussion held with my batch mates and friends working in different parts of the globe including the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, etc. etc.

Somebody is blaming the boss, somebody is blaming the company, somebody blaming peers for their low ratings or rating not commensurate to their yearly efforts. What do you think honestly because every one of us is a boss, a peer or a company or responsible functionary of the company ranging from managers to CXOs?

Do you think somebody else is responsible for your results of the efforts done by you throughout the year? No not at all friends, In my view every company, every boss, every peer cannot be biased. Let us introspect deeply….

Then think carefully and take responsibility for your actions. Stop blaming other people for your failures and low results. Even the Gita Holy book of India has been referred very clearly that human is solely responsible for his results as results are solely dependent on action done by individual in past.

Then how we can blame others for our failures and meager results.

Here come, one principle is known as 19-30 principle which says 19, can be replaced with 20 or 21 but 19 cannot be easily replaced with 30. It is not impossible but fairly difficult. Then try to benchmark you as 30 against the normal prevalent standard of 19, 20, 21, 22 in terms of KRAs which is a common yardstick to assess people across the globe.

Hence my dear friends try to work out on yourself for your own development instead of blaming others for your misfortune or less than expected results. Please identify your improvement areas, new skillset you need to acquire, new Behaviors and competencies you need to acquire.

The focus needs to be shifted from outside to inside otherwise life will be lost in misery and complaints towards others. It is better to start somewhere than to keep repenting every year. This is as per my discussion with senior corporate executives and veterans of education fraternity in addition to approx. 27 years of my own experience of being in the oil and gas industry.

These views are strictly my personal views may not be in line with my other friends of the industry.
